{"id":1420,"date":"2016-10-02T23:23:08","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T04:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/curculio.org\/?p=1420"},"modified":"2016-10-02T23:30:12","modified_gmt":"2016-10-03T04:30:12","slug":"a-tactful-cue-and-non-q-in-horace-ep-1-13-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/curculio.org\/?p=1420","title":{"rendered":"A Tactful Cue (and Non-Q) in Horace (<i>Ep.<\/i> 1.13.17)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The last four lines of the epistle to Vinnius, on his way to deliver a copy of Horace&#8217;s <em>Carmina<\/em> to Augustus, are clear enough, but one of the conjunctions seems dubious (16-19):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\">\n<em>neu uolgo narres te sudauisse ferendo<br \/>\ncarmina quae possint oculos auresque morari<br \/>\nCaesaris; oratus multa prece, nitere porro.<br \/>\nuade, uale, caue ne titubes mandataque frangas.<\/em>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In line 17, <em>oculos auresque<\/em> would naturally imply that the emperor will read Horace&#8217;s works aloud to himself, experiencing them with eyes and ears (not to mention tongue) at the same time, in the usual ancient way. Could Horace presume that? A disjunctive conjunction, <em>oculos aures<strong>ue<\/strong><\/em>, might better suit the tact of the poem, which otherwise carefully avoids any hint of presumption.
