WordPress doesn&#8217;t make it easy. The category archives are displayed in the order in which the categories were added. Since I want them to appear in a particular logical order, so I had to decide exactly what categories I wanted and in what order, and then reset the categories for all existing posts. I now have 96 categories, though only a few have any posts yet.
