In Horace the tone is often elusive. Perhaps the nearest thing in English is the parody [of Odes<\/em> 1.1] by Kipling in ‘A Diversity of Creatures’:<\/p>\n

There are whose study is of smells,
\n    Who to attentive schools rehearse
\nHow something mixed with something else
\n    Makes something worse.<\/p>\n

Some cultivate in broths impure
\n    The clients of our body; these,
\nIncreasing without Venus, cure
\n    Or cause disease.<\/p>\n

Others the heated wheel extol,
\n    And all its offspring, whose concern
\nIs how to make it farthest roll
\n    And fastest turn.<\/p>\n

Me<\/em>, much incurious if the hour
\n    Present, or to be paid for, brings
\nMe<\/em> to Brundisium by the power
\n    Of wheels or wings,<\/p>\n

Me<\/em>, in whose breast no flame has burned
\n    Life long, save that by Pindar lit,
\nSuch lore leaves cold; nor have I turned
\n    Aside for it,<\/p>\n

More than when, sunk in thought profound
\n    of what the unaltered Gods require,
\nMy steward (friend but slave) brings round
