In a Greek text:<\/strong> In Volume I of R. D. Dawe&#8217;s Teubner Sophocles (1975), the first word of <em>Oedipus Tyrannus<\/em> is misspelled. The fact that it&#8217;s a one-letter word is particularly impressive:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><font size=\"+1\"><span style=\"font-family: Vusillus, Gentium, Palatino Linotype, Arial Unicode MS\"><strong>\ue1cc \u03c4\u1f73\u03ba\u03bd\u03b1 \u039a\u1f71\u03b4\u03bc\u03bf\u03c5 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03c0\u1f71\u03bb\u03b1\u03b9 \u03bd\u1f73\u03b1 \u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03c6\u1f75<\/strong><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This was corrected to <font size=\"+1\"><span style=\"font-family: Vusillus, Gentium, Palatino Linotype, Arial Unicode MS\">\u1f6e<\/span><\/font> in the second edition (1984).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. In a Latin text:<\/strong> In D. R. Shackleton Bailey&#8217;s Teubner text of Horace, the last word of the Horatian corpus is misspelled, turning Horace&#8217;s leech who will not let go until full of blood into a bird, specifically a swallow:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>non missura cutem nisi plena cruoris hirundo<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m told this was corrected to <em>hirudo<\/em> in later printings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. In a secondary source:<\/strong>  In the <em>Cambridge History of Classical Literature, II: Latin Literature<\/em> (253), one of the most famous sentences in the Latin language is botched:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Quousque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientiam nostram?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It looks like some officious proofreader &#8216;corrected&#8217; the case of the last two words, forgetting the rule about &#8216;<em>utor<\/em>, <em>fruor<\/em>, <em>fungor<\/em>, <em>vescor<\/em>, <em>potior<\/em>, and their compounds&#8217; and assuming that <em>abutor<\/em> takes the accusative like a normal verb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are my nominations: 1.
